September 2024 – AI-Powered Innovations and Compatibility Updates

September 26, 2024

This September, we’re rolling out some of our most exciting updates yet. With advancements in AI translation and a continued focus on compatibility, we’re committed to helping you deliver better, faster, and more accurate multilingual content across your projects.

Get Ready for Better Than Human AI Translation

WPML is taking website translations to the next level with its upcoming Better Than Human Translation feature.

This powerful update combines the new WPML AI machine translation engine with Maiya, your soon-to-come AI translation assistant.

While Maiya is still under development, WPML AI beta is available now. It uses OpenAI’s capabilities with WPML’s proprietary technology to produce translations that understand context, rather than simply translating sentence by sentence.

In our tests across various content types—technical documents, storytelling, and more—native speakers rated WPML AI’s translations as nearly perfect. Currently, it supports translations from English to German, Spanish, French, Portuguese, and Italian. We’re also working to add more language pairs and enable translations from other languages to English soon.

WPML GraphQL 1.1.0 – New Features for Headless WordPress Sites

Our recent update, WPML GraphQL 1.1.0, brings powerful new features for headless, multilingual WordPress sites.

The latest version introduces full multilingual menu support, improved post queries by ID or slug, and easier management of multilingual content.

These improvements were driven by feedback from our valued WPML GraphQL users.

Compatibility Wins for Custom Elementor Widgets

In the last months, we’ve been working on a solution for clients experiencing issues with translating custom Elementor widgets. These widgets are often bundled with themes or plugins and add advanced features to websites. However, when not translatable, they can cause headaches for multilingual site owners.

We teamed up with theme developers and worked through issues flagged in our support forum. As a result, we published a post that highlights themes with fully translatable Elementor widgets.

Many user reports focused on themes listed on ThemeForest. Although we haven’t yet secured direct cooperation from their team, we’re actively reaching out to ThemeForest authors to encourage them to join our Go Global compatibility program.

We also revisited our work with developers of Elementor Addons. These plugins, which enhance Elementor’s core functionality, have been on our radar since 2021, when we first highlighted multilingual-friendly addons. Since then, we’ve resolved compatibility issues and established new connections with developers who have made their plugins fully translatable.

Spotlight on WPML in the WordPress Community

WPML has recently been featured in some great WordPress content across the web:

Our WooCommerce Multilingual add-on was praised in a list of the best multi-currency plugins for WooCommerce

Gravity Forms featured our guest post on how WPML’s Gravity Forms Multilingual lets you use AI translation to easily (and quickly!) translate WordPress forms

Further recognition came from Bootstrapped Ventures, who shared an article about culinary translations, showcasing the partnership between WPML and WP Recipe Maker

Toolset Gets a Shoutout

Though we’ve been less active with Toolset recently, it was included in an article about adding custom search functionality to WooCommerce stores. It’s a nice reminder that Toolset remains a useful tool for many developers.

Until Next Time

From major AI-driven translation innovations to new compatibility features and exciting collaborations, September 2024 has set a strong foundation for the future.

Keep an eye out for more updates, new tools, and other improvements coming soon!
