Bigul Malayi Takes the Stage at WordCamp Ahmedabad 2023

December 15, 2023

WordCamp Ahmedabad took place on the 9th of December and unfolded its grandeur as one of the largest gatherings in the WordPress community. I, Bigul Malayi, usually immersed in the day-to-day dynamics of our WPML Support team, found myself in a different role at this event. Here, I had the unique opportunity to step up as a speaker.

Speaking at WordCamp Ahmedabad: A Personal Account

I got an invitation from WordCamp Udaipur organizers to join a panel discussion titled “Nurturing the WordPress Community in Your Own City“. I’ve been part of the WordPress community for a long time, so this was a perfect fit.

Following this, I decided to also attend WordCamp Ahmedabad, as it was just a week away and conveniently close. The Ahmedabad WordPress community is impressive, one of the biggest around, and the event attracted about 1000 attendees from various parts of the world. I applied as a speaker for WordCamp Ahmedabad, aiming to discuss a topic close to my heart and profession.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is a hot topic these days, and I chose to talk about AI translation in an Indian context. With our rich linguistic diversity, this topic seemed particularly relevant. Additionally, I discussed AI translation possibilities in WordPress Polyglots, linking it to my role as a General Translation Editor (GTE) for the WordPress Malayalam locale.

Reunions and Insights

Both of these WordCamps were more than conferences; they were grand reunions. After a gap caused by the pandemic, it was refreshing to meet many community friends and our compatibility partners – companies like Yoast, WooCommerce, Jetpack, and others.

It also turned into an OTGS reunion. I attended WordCamp Udaipur with Minesh and WordCamp Ahmedabad with both Minesh and Sumit. After my talk at WordCamp Ahmedabad, we engaged in vibrant discussions about revamping the Indian WordPress Polyglots activities.

… and of course, we also had to make time for sightseeing

With the WordPress India community being the largest in terms of members and meetup groups, there’s a lot to look forward to. More WordCamps and innovative events are on the horizon for next year. I’m particularly excited about WordCamp Pune, coming up at the end of February. And as part of the WordPress Kerala community, we’re also in the early stages of planning a WordCamp and a couple of new-generation events for next year.

Given all these plans, 2024 is shaping up to be an intriguing and eventful year already!
