How Engineers Grow at OTGS: Benjamin Onah’s Story

March 13, 2026

At OTGS, career growth isn’t just about moving up. It’s about moving forward. Benjamin Onah’s story is a great example of what’s possible when curiosity meets opportunity.

Meet Benjamin

Benjamin Onah lives in Asaba, Delta State, Nigeria, with his wife Chidera and their three sons: Kambili, Jidenna, and Pope. Family time is very important to him, and outside of work he enjoys activities that help him stay both mentally and physically active.

He’s an avid chess player, a passionate Arsenal Football Club supporter, and enjoys swimming and outdoor activities.

Just like other OTGS team members, Benjamin values having a healthy balance between work, hobbies, and family life.

The First Years at OTGS

Benjamin joined OTGS in November 2020 as a Software Engineer on the WPML Translation Proxy team, a service that automates content exchange between the WPML plugin and professional translation services.

Over the next five years, he was involved in building, maintaining, and improving the proxy systems. It was also where he developed a deep understanding of how things work behind the scenes at OTGS.

I had the pleasure of working with a great team and learning a lot from them. It was a very rewarding experience.

But over time, Benjamin began to feel a pull toward something new.

A New Team and Opportunity for Growth

That pull led Benjamin to the Advanced Translation Editor (ATE) team, where he saw a chance to grow his technical skills in a new direction.

The Advanced Translation Editor is WPML’s built-in translation interface for translating WordPress content, and it is growing rapidly with new AI capabilities. Joining the ATE team meant diving into a different part of the ecosystem and working with a new group of engineers. But that’s exactly what made the move exciting.

Today, Benjamin points to a few things that keep him motivated.

First, the people

The leadership is supportive, and my teammates are highly skilled, intelligent, and collaborative, which creates a great working environment.

Second, the nature of the work itself.

The ATE systems are technically sophisticated and constantly evolving, which keeps the work engaging and helps me continue to grow as an engineer.

And third, the impact

I’m motivated by the opportunity to solve meaningful problems, build impactful features, and continuously improve my technical skills.

Benjamin’s Advice for Career Growth

For anyone thinking about their own growth, Benjamin has a simple message: don’t wait for opportunities to come to you.

Take initiative, deepen your understanding of the products, and continuously improve your technical and problem-solving skills. Changing teams within the company can be a great way to learn new systems, expand your perspective, and keep your work exciting. Growth often comes from stepping outside your comfort zone and embracing opportunities. Luckily, OTGS provides a great environment for that.

Benjamin’s journey from the Proxy to Advanced Translation Editor team is a good example of what that looks like in practice: five years of solid work and the willingness to take a step in a new direction. At OTGS, that kind of move is not just possible, it’s encouraged.
