WordCamp Europe is one of the two largest WordPress conferences in the world. And this year it came back as a live event!
At OnTheGoSystems, we traditionally use WordCamp Europe conferences as an opportunity to get as many of our remote team members together as possible. Of course, it’s also an awesome way to meet our clients and partners in person.
WordCamp Europe 2022 was held in Porto, a coastal city in Portugal brimming with history, people, and energy.
After a few pandemic years, the WordPress community finally came together again in person. This alone made it an extra special occasion.
In the words of our own Agnes Bury:
It felt soooo great to be with the WordPress community in person again! If you compare it to the online WordPress meetups, the difference is huge. I’d say it’s incomparable. After all, it’s not about watching presentations but about meeting people.
WordCamp Europe always brings together a special blend of speakers, presentations, and workshops. The best part is that there is something for everyone. No matter if you’re just a new WordPress user, an experienced developer, or a marketing professional, you’re bound to find at least one interesting talk.
As every year, we had our own sponsor table where we were able to meet with partners, users, and other WordPress enthusiasts.
And here’s how it looked like to listen to some great presentations at this year’s WordCamp Europe Track 1 arena.
Meeting our users in person is a one-of-a-kind opportunity to get first-hand feedback about our products and services. It’s often a special feeling for both us and the clients to have a face-to-face meeting with people you otherwise only know through electronic communication.
Of course, WordCamp Europe conferences are an invaluable way for the whole WordPress community to come together. From Contributors day to in-person debates, it is a unique opportunity for everyone to physically interact with each other.
When “done right”, working 100% remotely is utterly rewarding. Besides the work itself, it means staying active and healthy, having a rich personal life, and having the time to pursue the things you love.
However, we realize how powerful human connection is, so we are always more than happy to use these conferences as an “excuse” to get together. And because of the COVID-19 pandemic, most of our people weren’t able to meet in quite a while.
As our own Allison Rivers put it:
For me, the best part of WCEU was finally meeting my coworkers! I had been working at OTGS for 2 years already but had never met anyone face-to-face! It was great to finally get to hang out with the people I’ve only known from my computer screen and wander around Porto together. I think it showed me how important in-person conferences and get-togethers are for fully remote teams. Getting to be together and feel a part of the WordPress community was really special.
This is why we reserved one day to spend it together. We walked all around Porto, its streets and harbor, and even ended up on one of its huge sandy beaches.
And as a special treat, the company organized a nice dinner at a local restaurant for the whole team. If you ever come to Porto, you will not be disappointed by the local food, no matter what your dietary preferences are! :)
As they say, nice things fly by fast. But they leave a mark on our lives. This is why we’re already looking forward to the next WordCamp Europe which will be happening in Athens in 2023. Here’s to a better and safer world until then. Cheers!
