What does success look like at OTGS? For our fellow team member Sumit Singh, it’s about constant growth and taking on new challenges. From a Support role to becoming a Developer, Sumit’s career reflects the opportunities available for our remote team members.
Sumit, tell us about yourself.
I am originally from Agra, India, where I grew up and later got my bachelor’s degree in IT. I’ve lived in different parts of the country for years, but thanks to OTGS, I work from home and nearby places nowadays.
I love that my work aligns with my interests, but I also enjoy movies and TV shows, different cuisines, and spending time with family and friends.
When did you start working at OTGS and what was your exact position?
I started in 2015 as a 1st tier Supporter on the WPML Support team, focusing on resolutions for common issues. After a couple of months, I was moved to 2nd tier (handling more complex or technical issues), where I worked for almost 9 years. ;)
As a 2nd tier supporter, I frequently interacted with clients and developers at the same time, which meant I picked up a lot along the way. Apart from doing support work during these years, I contributed to other things, including documentation, training, development, and testing.
What is your current position, and how did you grow into this role?
I am currently working as a Developer with the WPML Development team. I am responsible for fixing bugs and working on new features for WPML. I enjoy what I do. We follow the best development practices here, and I’m always learning something new, which keeps me motivated every day.
Before transitioning to this position, I was curious about learning new tech stacks. Pierre Sylvestre, the Compatibility Team Leader, and David García Watkins, a Developer on the Compatibility team, evaluated me and suggested areas for improvement. My time in Support and active contribution to WordPress helped me upgrade my skills for this role.
But, it wasn’t just thanks to my skills. My fellow team members Laura, Amit, and Ivan all helped me get this opportunity.
In short, what advice would you give someone who wants to grow within the company?
I would say just keep sharpening your skills. We’ve got some seriously talented people in the company, and there is so much we can learn from them to grow.
